The week began with reports from owners of the new Kindle Colorsoft e-reader of a disturbing yellow strip at the bottom of the screen. Amazon acknowledged that it is aware of the problem.
Yesterday, it was reported that Amazon was canceling shipments of the Kindle Colorsoft. The information apparently came from a random Reddit post.
Tom's Guide contacted Amazon to see if the shipment had been canceled and to get more information about the display issue.
An Amazon spokesperson responded today, stating that “a small number of customers have reported a yellow band along the bottom of the display.”
“We take the quality of our products very seriously. Customers who notice this issue can contact our customer service team for a replacement or refund, and we are making appropriate adjustments to ensure that new devices will not experience this issue in the future,” the spokesperson continued.
Amazon has not confirmed whether shipments have been suspended. As new or replacement devices become available, the availability date could shift, they said. They also did not provide information on what “adjustments” are being made to remove the yellow band.
It is not clear whether the band is a software or hardware issue, but given that Amazon is offering a replacement, we would like to assume that it is a hardware-related issue.
If it is a hardware issue, we will likely see a delay in shipments as Amazon either works to fix the color software terminals already produced or manufactures new terminals that have been fixed.
An Amazon spokesperson stated that the ColorSoft should still work with the yellow screen. We are told that turning off the e-reader and letting it sit for a few minutes should fix the problem, but we do not know if doing so will cause the problem to recur.
Kindle Colorsoft reviewers did not experience the reported yellow bars. In addition, they praised the vibrant color display and gave it a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Despite the high rating, we downgraded this e-reader because it was nearly twice the price of the Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition.
We have checked the device since this problem began and have been unable to reproduce the issue.
Enough people have experienced this problem that we would not be surprised if Amazon announces a recall that gets to the heart of this issue.
