Netflix's “Beef” is officially back for a second season; the dark comedy-drama, which premiered in April 2023, quickly became one of the streaming platform's highest-rated shows, earning an impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes on Rotten Tomatoes. [Season 2 will consist of eight episodes, each lasting 30 minutes. Lee Sung Jin returns as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Joining him again as executive producers are Jake Schreier, Steven Yeun, and Ali Wong.
Earlier this year, Deadline reported that casting for Season 2 was underway. But finally, the critically acclaimed show has been renewed by creators and showrunners Lee and A24. And we have information about who will be in the show (it's an anthology series, so Yuen and Wong probably won't be back) and the next big feud.
So here's everything we know about the “Beef” Season 2 renewal, including casting, plot, and a release date on Netflix.
“Beef” Season 2 takes a new direction with an entirely new cast, and the lineup is impressive. The first season focused on Danny (Yong) and Amy (Wong) as they were caught up in a road rage incident that consumed their lives and those around them.
As noted above, it is unlikely that Ye-Eun and Wong will return. Instead, Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cary Spaney will share the spotlight this time around.
Specific details about their characters have not been revealed, but it is almost guaranteed that such a diverse and talented mix of actors will bring a new flavor to the dark comedy and tension of the show. This new cast is wide-ranging, and I look forward to seeing Spaney in this comedy-drama, especially after seeing his excellent performance in “Alien: Romulus.”
Netflix Tudum revealed a short synopsis of the inciting incident in “Beef” Season 2: “A young couple witnesses a surprising fight between their boss and his wife, a chess move of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner causes."
.
It is safe to assume that the young couple is played by Spaney and Melton and the husband and wife by Isaac and Mulligan. Given that the first season was inspired by showrunner Lee's own road rage incident, it will be interesting to see how this season plays out. Lee told the SXSW panel for “Beef”: “[The BMW] honked at me, cursed at me, and drove off. And for some reason that day I thought, 'I'm going to follow you.'”
It has not been confirmed whether Season 2 will be inspired by actual events, but it will still tell a story driven by anger. Lee also spoke about Tudam and the show's theme at the Golden Globe awards ceremony: as the character George (Joseph Lee) says in season 1, “Anger is just a transient state of consciousness.”
Not much else is known about “Beef” Season 2, and a release date has not yet been set. However, we can speculate that it will hit the small screen in late 2025, depending on the filming schedule. Season 1 began filming in April 2022 and was released a year later, in April 2023. So if Season 2 goes into production this year, there should be no need to wait until 2026 (fingers crossed).
In the meantime, why not binge “Beef” Season 1 again on Netflix? And if you want to see something fresh, you can also check out this week's new arrivals on Netflix.
