Change is always the name of the game when it comes to the best streaming services, and while Netflix is adding new movies every month, the downside is that previous favorites are being removed to make room in the platform's digital library.
With only a few days left in October 2024, Netflix has confirmed the movies it will remove on the last day of the month (Thursday, October 31). Among them are one of the most relentlessly entertaining films ever made, a classic comedy set in medieval England, and a big-budget zombie movie.
You won't have much time to watch these Netflix movies, so remember to clear your schedule and put them at the top of your watch list. Here are five Netflix movies to watch now before they are removed from the streaming service next week.
Todd Haynes, director of “Carol” and “The Lion in May,” teams with Mark Ruffalo in this legal thriller. On the surface, a drama about a lawyer trying to expose illegal pollution at the multinational chemical company DuPont may not sound like such a gripping story, but there is a real stake in this case. Attorney Robert Billot (Ruffalo) discovers that it is not only the animals that are sickened by DuPont's actions in the town of Parkersburg, West Virginia, but the local residents as well.
Inspired by a New York Times Magazine article and a subsequent book about the case, “Dark Waters” is very compelling. Thanks in part to Ruffalo's committed performance, you will be seething with a sense of injustice as DuPont's cost-cutting practices are exposed. Please don't dismiss this as a ludicrous film riddled with legal jargon. With thriller elements added to the mix, this is a drama that is very much worth watching.

“La La Land” is one of the most enjoyable films ever made. This 2016 musical is so full of vibrant colors and sparkling lights that it is impossible to watch it without laughing out loud. Lead actors Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have the most natural chemistry ever captured on screen, and both perfectly embody likable characters. Furthermore, and I can't say this enough, the music is so great that you will be playing the soundtrack on repeat for days after viewing. Just writing this now makes me want to listen to it again.
Sebastian (Gosling) and Mia (Stone) are two dreamers living in LA who have big ambitions but are now struggling to find their place in the urban sprawl. But a chance meeting brings them together, and they quickly develop a romance and push each other to make their dreams come true. But as they take steps toward success, they are forced to make choices that could tear them apart. La La Land is a modern masterpiece.”

One of my earliest moviegoing memories is watching “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” for the first time at a friend's New Year's Eve party. And to this day, it remains one of my favorite comedies.
Unashamedly silly, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” begins with a scene in which King Arthur (Graham Chapman) pretends to ride a horse while his followers pound two coconuts together to mimic the sound of a horse's hooves. As the legendary king and his knights of the Round Table (played by other members of the comedy group Python) search for the mythical Holy Grail, they encounter all sorts of funny obstacles, from a very dangerous rabbit to a pack of knights who say the word “knee.”

“Sonic the Hedgehog,” released at a time when reaction to movies and TV shows based on video games was still skeptical, proved to be a surprisingly fun action adventure. Perfect for family viewing, this 2020 film offers blockbuster thrills and a simple but engaging story. Additionally, Sonic's design is spot on. Fortunately, the filmmakers have changed course after initially introducing a nightmarish blue blur.
In his first live-action epic, Sonic finds himself on Earth after a disastrous childhood escape. Living comfortably in the town of Green Hills, Montana, he befriends the local sheriff, Tom (James Marsden). But when evil scientist Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) learns of this spiky blue hedgehog and his supersonic powers, he will stop at nothing to capture our hero and use this special ability for world domination.

“World War Z” is far from the most faithful adaptation in Hollywood history, but this 2013 action thriller takes the bones of Max Brooks' best-selling novel of the same name and uses them to convincingly zombie storytelling, making the shabby monsters actually scary again. Starring Brad Pitt, this energetic blockbuster mixes in just the right amount of horror to keep audiences on their toes, but not enough to scare the overly frightened.
Jerry Lane (Pitt) is a former UN investigator who must spring into action when the world is engulfed by a deadly virus that turns infected people into violent creatures. The more evolved zombies don't roam around looking for brains, but their bite remains the same. To protect his family, Jerry must travel around the world to find out what caused the zombie outbreak in the first place and to find a way to stop the virus that will eventually wipe out the human race.
