Hulu has announced an adaptation of Charles Yu's best-selling novel Interior Chinatown.
While the trailer starts off rather subdued, “Interior Chinatown” is a combination of high-octane action and crime drama, spiced up by the comical style of its lead stars.
It begins with the introduction of Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang). He is a “background character” on the sidelines of a police investigation, leading a very ordinary life day in and day out. One day, however, he meets a detective (Chloe Bennett) who hires him as her inside man to investigate a mysterious case in Chinatown.
From there, the teaser takes a turn. As hints of the strange aspects of the case and the show are revealed, we are promised a “mind-blowing” viewing experience. And as soon as Willis warns that “kung fu could break out in this area at any moment,” ...... We are treated to a taste of kung fu action by Willis, his Golden Palace colleague (played by Ronnie Chen), and some mysterious thugs. Intrigued? Start below:
Watching the “Interior Chinatown” footage above, I couldn't help but be reminded of two action-packed projects in recent memory: Daniels' thrilling multiverse adventure “Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Netflix's underrated comedy-drama The Brothers Sun. As a big fan of both (and excited for Ke Hui Quan's forthcoming “Love Hurts”), I expect Hulu's “Interior Chinatown” to deliver similar thrills when it debuts later this year. [Waititi is executive producing and directing the pilot for “Interior Chinatown.” Waititi is also the executive producer and director of the pilot for Interior Chinatown. All 10 episodes will be available on Hulu on Tuesday, November 19.
In addition to Yang, Chien, and Bennett, the series also stars Tsi Ma, Sullivan Jones, Lisa Gilroy, Diana Lin, Archie Kao, Annie Chang, Chau Long, and Michael Harney.
