Many of you may be spending your days counting down to the mid-November airing of “Yellowstone” Season 5 Part 2. Enter: “Territory,” a new Netflix drama that seems designed to appeal to fans of Taylor Sheridan.
The six-part Netflix series is set in the unforgiving Australian outback and is an explosive family drama about the Northern Territory's most powerful factions fighting for control of the world's largest (fictional) cattle station. It's as beautiful and as melodramatic as any of Paramount's hits.
“Territory” has garnered solid praise, drawing many comparisons to Paramount's popular film, and has already earned the #4 spot on the Netflix Top 10 Shows list just one day after its October 24 debut (at time of writing).
Read on to learn a little more about “Territory” and to see what critics are saying about Netflix's latest drama.
“Territory” is an Australian neo-western family drama centered on the cattle industry, created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davis.
The series takes place in Marianne Station, which is about the size of Belgium.
The Lawson dynasty is on the verge of a split when its de facto heir, Daniel (Jake Ryan), is killed and those who seek to succeed the patriarch, Colin Lawson (Robert Taylor), fight to take over.
This generational conflict is not the only problem Marianne Station faces. Other bigwigs who have sensed that the family is in disarray - rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, indigenous elders, and billionaire miners - all have their eyes on the prize. This is a battle for land and heritage, a veritable gamble.
In addition to Taylor and Ryan, “Territory” also features a large ensemble cast including Anna Torv (“The Last Of Us”), Michael Dorman, Sam Corlett, Sarah Weissman, Clarence Ryan, and Philippa Northeast.
“Territory” just debuted on Netflix on October 24, so not much of a response yet.
As of this writing, the series has earned an 80% critical rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes from the first six certified reactions, with all but one being a generally positive take.
Critic Daniel Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter described “Territory” as “a smooth ride over well-trodden terrain.” He noted that there had been many similar projects (including “Yellowstone”) before, but was impressed overall and described it as “a drama you can always watch.”
Amanda Yow of Mashable, who reviewed the first two episodes of “Territory,” said that comparisons to “Yellowstone” and “Succession” were “inevitable and justified,” but that “‘Territory’ embraces the unique Australian character in its efforts to distinguish itself.
The Guardian's Luke Buckmaster was also particularly impressed. He gave “Territory” four stars, calling it a “hilarious Aussie drama” and a “sensational mix” of bickering, soapy drama, and occasionally explosive action.
In my humble opinion, “Territory” is well worth a look. After seeing some of the early takes, I decided to check out the show. [29] [30] It is also worth a look if you like to marvel at great vistas. The Territory is not shy about presenting beautiful shots of its stunning outback setting.
Non-Australian viewers may find the conversation a bit confusing, but Netflix has put together a handy guide to Australian slang and the specific terms Mr. and Mrs. Lawson fly around with Tudum to keep you up to speed.
