There are some movies that burrow into your mind and never let go When I first saw it, I immediately felt a chilling sense of dread, which only increased as the story spiraled into a whirlwind of chaos In fact, it is one of the best horror thrillers I have ever seen And now it's streaming for free, so you can experience this masterpiece without spending a dime (really)
“It Follows” doesn't just send chills down your spine or send the audience to hell It is about a deeper, more primal fear, a fear that focuses solely on the feminine gender Rooted in an original story and featuring an unforgettable score, the film does not rely on jump scares or gore The scares linger until midnight, even after you've turned off the screen
If you haven't seen this masterpiece yet, here's why “It Follows” should be on the best free streaming services
“It Follows” is a supernatural horror thriller centered on Jay (Maika Monroe), a young woman who, after a sexual encounter, is pursued by a mysterious and obsessive presence The being, which can take on any human form, follows the victim at a slow walking pace, but never stops The only way to escape the curse is to pass it on to someone else through sexual contact, but even then, when the new victim dies, the entity returns to target the previous person in turn
I have to say that this is one of the most shocking films ever made, not only for its terrifying premise, but also because it cuts deeper into contemporary fears On the surface, this is a horror film about a supernatural curse, but dig a little deeper and you find disturbing allegories of everything from sexual assault to sexually transmitted diseases to distrust of authority to the insecurities that come with growing up For Jay, the curse she is forced to bear feels like a literal punishment for being sexually active
Despite the obvious dark themes, where “It Follows” truly shines is simply in its originality The film knows how to construct horror in a completely unique way But the beauty of the film lies in its breadth of interpretation Depending on how you look at it, the curse can represent a variety of fears and anxieties, making the story deeply personal and subjective to each viewer
At its core, however, “It Follows” makes you empathize with Jaye She is an ordinary woman caught up in an extraordinary situation, and you can't help but sympathize with her as she desperately tries to escape the horrors that no one else can understand (or even see, which is arguably more terrifying) This emotional connection, combined with the beautiful imagery and haunting music, make this a powerful film
Critics have given “It Follows” a staggering 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so don't take my word for it Bill Goodicorns of The Arizona Republic says: “There's a lot going on, but there's a sense of dread in all of it It's not gory It will creep you out It's much more satisfying”
Michael Rechtshaffen of the Los Angeles Times, on the other hand, agreed that the film does not attempt to scare with stereotypical horror representations: “A smart, relentlessly chilling thriller that chooses originality over cheaply reworked shock” Michael O'Sullivan of The Washington Post wrote: “‘It Follows’ is one of the scariest films I've ever seen It's also one of the most beautiful films” [If you like horror, dark thrillers, and incredible storytelling, “It Follows” is a must-see this month In addition, a sequel is in the works, with Monroe reprising her role as the main character Frankly, this is a needless sequel, given that the original ended perfectly, but I'm willing to give it a shot
With its original premise and deeply disturbing atmosphere, “It Follows” offers one of the most memorable experiences in modern horror The biggest attraction You can stream it for free on Tubi right now This is a completely free streaming service, and you don't have to pay a cent Be warned, however, that Tubi usually only stores fresh movies and shows for a month
