In the past, hearing “video game adaptation” was tantamount to saying, “This is going to be a terrible movie/show” There have been numerous attempts over the years to bring stories and characters from the video game industry to the screen, but until recently, most have failed [In recent years, however, the best streaming services, including Netflix and Prime Video, have been inspired by or drawn directly from some of the gaming industry's biggest franchises, providing quality entertainment for their viewers The proof is evident in my “Borderlands” review But unshakable video game movies and TV shows are here to stay
Here are just a handful of the best that have entertained us over the years
“Arcane” first appeared in 2021 and quickly became one of the most famous video game adaptations we have ever seen The dramatic animated series serves as an origin story for the characters in Riot Games' multiplayer hit League of Legends
Though, to be honest, we felt it was too obvious to pick a Pokémon cartoon
So, to represent this huge Nintendo franchise, we'd like to spotlight “Pokémon Concierge,” an utterly delightful stop-motion Netflix series that came out in late 2023
Typical of the phrase “fun in the sun,” this charming animated show transports us to a Pokémon resort where employees help Pokémon (and their owners) unwind It is beautifully put together and moves at a leisurely pace Light on plot and heavy on atmosphere, the main purpose of the film is to introduce the endearingly silly side of the adorable Pokémon and to make viewers of all ages want to take a break every once in a while
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100 View on Netflix
Although the initial character designs didn't work out, director Jeff Fowler's 2020 “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie is a fun romp starring the supersonic Sega mascot (voiced by Ben Schwartz)
In this first film, after a tragedy on a distant planet, he goes to our world and settles in Green Hills, Montana
