“Penguin” is the first of two live-action DC Comics films to be released in 2024
Before Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga were linked in Todd Phillips' Joker: Joker: Folie à Deux (and Batman: Caped Crusader), which will be released this October will return to Matt Reeves' gritty vision of Gotham City in The Penguin, an original TV series for HBO and Max, before “Joker: Folie à Deux” (and “Batman: Caped Crusader”) comes to Prime Video
Set in the immediate aftermath of everything that happened in “Batman,” the eight-part series will continue that saga, focusing on a secondary villain played by Colin Farrell According to Farrell's remarks when the series was first announced, he is very excited to be back for more chaos
“The world Matt Reeves has created for ‘Batman’ is one worth looking deeper into through [Oz Cobb's] eyes,” Farrell said in a statement
“I couldn't be more excited to continue this quest as Oz rises through the dark ranks to become the Penguin It's good to see him back on the streets of Gotham and involved in a bit of madness and mayhem”Just a few weeks after the release of the new teaser trailer, more details about “The Penguin” will be announced at San Diego Comic-Con Here is a recap of what we know so far Here is what we know so far about “The Penguin
“The Penguin” will appear on HBO and Max in September 2024, according to the latest official teaser When we have a more precise release date, we will be sure to list it here
The show was originally billed as a “Max Original,” but in early July (according to Variety), the HBO team successfully renegotiated an international deal that means both “The Penguin” and “Dune”: in Matt Reeves' version of The Penguin, set in Gotham, Colin Farrell reprises his role as Oz Cobb in the title role But who else is in “The Penguin”? The cast list includes:
HBO is not shy about previewing footage of “The Penguin”
The latest teaser is embedded below This teaser was released in June 2024 and introduced us to the clearest idea of the plot and the imposing mafia, Sofia Falcone, played by Criston Milioti From what I've seen so far, this looks to be a grim crime investigation worth watching
If you want to see as much of the show as possible, here are some links to other teaser trailers HBO has released so far:
If you were expecting an official synopsis, you are out of luck The Max Landing page for The Penguin says: “This HBO original series starring Colin Farrell continues the epic crime saga that Matt Reeves started with Batman This is not something we can work with
As far as the trailer (which can be seen later in this article) is concerned, the series primarily follows Oz Cobb as he goes to war with a rival crime syndicate in Gotham In this war, he will also cross paths with Sofia Falcone, but it is not yet clear how the two will work together
In an interview with Variety in 2022, Max's original department head, Sarah Aubry, shared with us the core idea behind the show Aubrey said, “The goal of the show is to show what life is like in Oz, and that is to rise up and overcome the streets of Gotham as only a penguin can, as a hustler and a strategist with ambitions of his own” [27][28] “It's a great example of having time to tell a full-length character story over eight episodes, with delicious twists and lots of new characters We're not flying around like Batman, so the story is on the street level of Gotham We all embrace it as a very special experience that the audience can have”
From what we've seen so far, “Penguin” certainly sounds like a fascinating spin-off I don't know much about this show yet, but from the start I got the impression that it was a gritty, down-to-earth crime drama Also, as a big fan of Reeves' aesthetic in “Batman,” I'm glad to see that look being kept here
I also hope that this series will somehow set the stage for “Batman 2” Certainly, if Oz succeeds in establishing himself as a new major character, it will only be a bigger problem for Bruce Wayne, played by Robert Pattinson, you know?
