I can't understand why "Autumn Man" went below the box office It stars 2 charismatic (and incredibly charming) leads, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, both coming out of last year's 2 biggest films ("Barbie" and "Oppenheimer") It was directed by the great director, David Leach, and won positive reviews from critics and viewers alike
Its premise is fun, and crucially not too "out there" for mainstream viewers, and it falls squarely into the accessible action-comedy genre The film had the perfect recipe for success But when it landed in theaters in early May, it was filled with enthusiastic shrugs and failed to attract interest from movie audiences。
After less than two weeks in the cinema, it sounds like a lot of just shy of just130m at the global box office, but it is estimated to be somewhere around around140m, before considering its budget and marketing costs, suddenly things look much less rosy It's a good idea
The biggest sign that the movie has flopped in theaters is that Universal has chosen to release on its premium streaming platform today (5/21), effectively confirming that its theatrical performance was overwhelming
You can now buy/rent a movie on a service like Amazon or Apple TV, and I recommend giving it a watch at home if you skip it in the theater, because it's a complete blast
Based on an 80s TV show of the same name (proving that Hollywood will really reboot anything), "The Fall Guy" sees Gosling play Colt Seavers, who works as a double for action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor Johnson) He also has a romance with photographer Jodi Moreno (Brandt)
When the stunt goes wrong, Colt's career is left in ruins and he pushes Jodie away A few months later, Jodie is finally getting the chance to step up and direct a film starring Ryder, but the photos are in danger of shutting down permanently if the selfish star goes missing It's up to Colt to find the missing actor, solve the mystery, save the movie and get the girl's heart back
"Autumn Man" is moving at a pleasant pace Its ultimate destination is pretty obvious, but the journey is so much fun that it doesn't bother to look 1 mile away to reveal the big The main reason the film is such a delight is Gosling, who once again displays his impeccable comedy chops Colt is not a carbon copy of his iconic performance as Ken, but closer to the actor's role in 2016's "The Nice Guys"
Blunt is also great, but I was initially worried that she wouldn't get enough screen time, but her character would only serve as Gosling's love interest, and I was delighted to see her get a few moments to shine Interspersed with Colt in a hectic car chase, the halfway sequence of the movie, where Jodie sings in a karaoke bar, is a highlight showcasing Reed's talent for both of them (plus, 2 have great chemistry) I would ship them any time
There's a lot of comedy and romance, but the action is also excellent thanks to the work of david Leitch The directors of "John Wick" and "Deadpool2" know how to build elaborate action sequences, and "The Fall Guy" presents some of his best works to date The aforementioned car chase set piece is a great example, as is the scene of the later penthouse apartment shootout
In many ways, "The Fall Guy" feels like a throwback to the Hollywood blockbusters of the past few decades It's a riot from start to finish, convincing, but with a simple plot and a couple of great major performances at its core (and I don't always mention the great Hannah Waddingham and Winston Duke) That's exactly the definition of crowdpleaser, so it's a movie I just want to recommend to about everyone
"The Fall Guy" enjoys strong reviews from critics It holds a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is enough to earn a "certified fresh" seal of approval Moreover, its audience score is even higher at 87%, so it's clear that the people who saw this in the theater loved it
Legendary British film critic Mark Kermode summed up the film nicely when he called it "popcorn fun" Meanwhile, Richard Roper of the Chicago Sun・Times writes, "When you have jaw・dropping stunts and the playful chemistry of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, you care about whether the plot holds"
Moira McDonald of the Seattle Times wrote, "[The Man of the Fall] has an unusual quality in big studio movies: a sense of fun," and audience member Deborah Ross expressed similar sentiments, calling the film "a brilliantly fun, screwball action film that pokes fun at action movies" "You should enjoy it with a big old bucket of popcorn," he said
Of course, not all critics were fans, FilmWeek's Peter Rainer was particularly cut, saying, "I found the film to be thoroughly loud and not terribly inspired"Let's just say, I do not agree
To be honest, some of the thrills of that epic blockbuster could be lost in the transition to streaming because "Autumn Man" was obviously made for the big screen, but the fascinating chemistry between Gosling and Brandt certainly isn't, and if you're looking for a decent home entertainment, you might want to try it out I'm sure even the action scene will still be pleasing, as long as I have a set-up for it
"Autumn Man" is the type of blockbuster I want to see more often these days, and I think that its failure to make enough money in the execution of that play will blow a second wind in similar f-finger-crossed streaming, and anyone who stupidly skipped it in the cinema will never make the same mistake twice It is not
If you're looking for some no-frills entertainment this week (or on the weekend), check out "Autumn Man", which is funny and thrilling in equal measure Plus, it's just one of the many new movies that will arrive on streaming this week1For a complete overview, which also includes "Dune Part Two" and "Civil War," see the summary
