In the upcoming second season of the "Game of Thrones" prequel series, Aemon Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) will play a key role in the succession battle between siblings Rhaenyra (Emma Darcy) and Aegon II (Tom Glyn-Carney) for the throne of their late father, which is not surprising given the explosive Given the explosive "House of Dragons" Season 1 finale, it should come as no surprise And a new teaser photo from HBO is ominous proof
In the image, posted on the official "House of Dragons" Instagram page on March 28, the prince known as Aemon One-Eye, along with Sir Christon Cole, played by Fabian Frankel, can be seen strategizing over a map spread (for obvious reasons) The caption of the photo reads "Challenging kin," clearly suggesting that Aemon is preparing for battle with his Targaryen brothers
Cole is an interesting character in the civil war He is connected to Rainaila as her former personal guard and lover, but his anger and heartbreak over Rainaila's arranged marriage to her first husband, Rainer Velarion, causes Sir Christon to switch sides and serve Aegon II in revenge And readers of George R R Martin's "Fire and Blood" series, on which "The House of Dragons" is based, will remember Aemon and Christon frequently rubbing shoulders in the battles of "The Dance of Dragons"
For those who need a refresher on the Season 1 finale - spoiler alert! - (Spoiler alert!) Aemon was last seen in Storm's End trying to convince Lord Boros Baratheon to support Aegon's claim to the throne by promising to marry one of the lords' daughters However, Aemon's nephew, Prince Lucerys Velarion (Elliot Gryholt), came to speak on behalf of his mother Lenira, causing a bit of a family feud, as Aemon still resented Luke for injuring his eye in a fight as a child The altercation at Storm's End developed into an all-out dragon chase between uncle and nephew, with Aemon's dragon verger killing Luke
Needless to say, going into Season 2, Lainira is not only after the throne, she is after blood In the recently released dueling trailers, Rhenira, representing the "Black" (Rhenira, Daemon and their Dragonstone forces) and the "Green" (Aegon II, Aemon and his King's Landing minions) take a more active role in the succession struggle than on the page
"House of the Dragon" Season 2 will return on HBO on Sunday, June 16, thankfully much sooner than we originally thought While we wait to see how Aemon's evil plan against the remnants of House Targaryen unfolds, you can revisit "HOTD" Season 1 with Max's subscription Also, bookmark Tom's Guide for new information and updates on the second season of "House of the Dragon"
