In a one-two punch to my wallet, there are rumors that Sony's PS5 Pro and revamped Nintendo Switch console will share a similar launch window
In a rather cryptic tweet, well-known leaker segamega99 (open in new tab) claims that both consoles will launch "soon," but does not reveal exactly when The tweet appears to be based on information from a wholesale retailer, who states that Sony and Nintendo are manufacturing both consoles in large quantities for wholesalers and will probably hit the market around the same time
These claims surfaced shortly after a leak from Insider Gaming revealed that Sony is actively developing the PS5 Pro for a 2024 launch the Pro is a mid-lifecycle refresh of the base PS5, with visual and performance improvementsAs for the Switch, previously leaked information suggests that a new Switch model will be released in conjunction with the Pokémon Scarlett and Pokémon Violet DLC, which is scheduled for winter 2023
Rumors about both the PS5 Pro and the new Switch console have been circulating for years
Interestingly, segamega99 mentions the Nintendo Switch Pro as opposed to the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 This sparks rumors that the next Mario Maker console may also be a mid-lifecycle refresh with upgraded technology similar to the Nintendo Switch's OLED, rather than a true successor This rumor, however, has been repeatedly denied by Nintendo
Nintendo's six-year-old console is aging I, like my colleagues, feel that it is too late in the life cycle of the Nintendo Switch to upgrade the Switch Pro piecemeal So I eagerly await a true successor like the Nintendo Switch 2, with improved battery life and the dreaded Joy-Con drift fixed
The same leaker posted in April (open in new tab) that Nintendo's next console will have "The Legend of Zelda," "Super Mario" and "Splatoon" games "at launch" It is not clear if these are new titles or existing titles upgraded for the new hardware Our guess is the latter, for obvious reasons Splatoon 3 was released less than a year ago, while the highly anticipated "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdoms" will be released a few weeks later Development cycles for both series typically take several years, so it will likely be a while before a new title is released
