For gamers still on the hunt for a restocked PS5, Sony has some bad news Sony does not expect to be able to significantly increase the PS5's manufacturing capacity anytime soon, and may even have to redesign the in-demand console to solve this problem
VGC transcribed a Sony investor conference call held after the release of Sony's annual financial report, in which Sony CFO Hiroki Toki said, "We aim to sell more units than the PS4 (in the second year) But will we be able to dramatically increase supply? No, that is unlikely"
"Shortage of semiconductor supply is one factor, but there are other factors that affect production volume So at this point, we would like to (exceed) the PS4's second year sales volume of 148 million units"
Totoki mentioned the ongoing global semiconductor shortage because the chip crisis is causing manufacturing headaches in every industry From video game consoles to electric cars, every technological product is affected
Toki suggested that Sony might be able to address the shortage by either finding secondary resources to manufacture game consoles or by "redesigning" game consoles to avoid the problem
While we do not expect the PS5 to undergo a major redesign anytime soon, it is interesting to hear that Sony is considering some tweaks to the console to improve its ability to meet overwhelming demand
Sony's latest earnings report paints a very rosy picture overall for PlayStation Sony sold 78 million PS5 units through March 31, more than the PS4 sold in its first fiscal year Operating profit also reached $314 billion The division is extremely healthy and continues to be one of the jewels in Sony's portfolio
The news that the PS5 will not be easier to buy before Christmas must be a major frustration for the thousands of gamers eager to get their hands on the next generation PlayStation So, if you want a chance to get your hands on this coveted machine, check out our PS5 restocking guide for the latest availability information
