Microsoft has learned from the mistakes it made with the Xbox One and promises to take bold steps between now and the launch of the Xbox Series X
Speaking to Gamertag Radio, Xbox head Phil Spencer revealed that he was resistant to revealing the Xbox Series X at The Game Awards, but that this risky decision paves the way for "bolder" decisions in the future
Spencer admitted that she was "not the biggest fan" of the idea of revealing the next generation console in a teaser trailer at the awards show, and referred to someone on the marketing team as the brain behind the plan
"She stood up in the room and said, 'We should do something bold, something we've never done before Frankly, we are not in the market position that we wanted to be in this last generation I don't think we can disrupt and grow our business by doing the same things we've always done Let's go out and try something new'"
The announcement was a huge success Gamers were grateful to Xbox for seizing the opportunity and wondered when Sony would do the same However, had Spencer dismissed the idea that it could have been a disaster, the plan would never have unfolded Instead, gamers got a good taste of Series X and left wanting more
Spencer attributed the successful unveiling to the video assets, but stressed that he was hesitant to do something so drastic
"It was cool to do it, and I think the response was great," he said But let's be honest, sitting down with you today would have been a disaster" But let's be honest, it could have been a disaster sitting with you today"
The repercussions of this bold move seem to have flipped a switch for Spencer, who says he is "trying to think about things in a different way" in "every decision" that Xbox makes from now until the launch of Series X
"Some will be right, some will be wrong, but we're definitely not going to be meek
We are pleased that Microsoft has recognized its past mistakes and has promised to correct them Let's hope this bold move is the right one and that the Xbox will put up a good fight against the PS5 this holiday season
