Sony recently announced the Alpha 1 (A1), an 8K camera that breaks new ground in the camera world: not only can the A1 record at 8K/30fps, but its full-frame sensor captures 50.1MP images and features a new, more advanced real-time Eye AF (autofocus) system The A1 will be on our list of best mirrorless cameras.
Aside from the 50.1MP sensor, the coolest feature of the Sony Alpha 1 is its advanced Eye AF. Sony's new system tracks animals as well as people in motion. It is advanced enough to capture an eagle diving toward a lake to catch a fish. According to Sony's Alpha 1 announcement, the camera has 759 AF points, covering 93% of the sensor. Such tracking is next-generation level and should make wildlife photography easier for professionals.
For sports photographers, there is improved real-time tracking that automatically tracks subjects biking down a ravine or coming off a balance beam.
The Sony Alpha 1 also has a smooth 9.44 million dot viewfinder with a magnification of 0.90x and a refresh rate of 240 fps. The spec list for this camera is extensive, but here are a few additional features that catch the eye.
In the past, cameras ran into an unforeseen bottleneck when shooting at 8K; the processing power required to shoot at 7,680 x 4,320 often limited the camera's recording time. Sony claims that the A1's all-magnesium body and better heat dissipation management allows the photographer to shoot for longer periods of time
before the camera needs to cool down.
The Sony Alpha 1 will be available this March for $6,500 and is currently available for pre-order at Adorama.
